The disruption of the Indian higher education system: Socializing the anti-socials

The Indian Higher education sector is valued at roughly $ 11 Billion. This segment includes only those Indians who enroll for degree courses in India. In addition there are almost $ 13 Billion spent annually by Indian students seeking admission to foreign universities.
This makes the total higher education pie of almost $ 24 Billion.

So that is a significant market if one thinks of the sheer numbers that are available for Indian education institutions. In this environment it is important for organizations to harness the power of disruptive creation. One of those sources could be social media.
Using teaching tools based on Social media could not only enhance the quality of education but also convert some of the foreign aspirants to start considering Indian institutions in their quest for higher education.

The other significant number is that the number of Indian students opting for higher studies is only 11% of the school pass outs. This is much lower than the global average of 23%. This creates another opportunity for institutions to invest in tools like Share Point, Yammer, Jive or Connections and integrate them with video facilities like Skype to create virtual class rooms of the future.

I think the ball is in our court and it is time to disrupt the status quo…
Do let me know what do you think? Do Indian education institutions have the guts to aim for glory or is it going to be the same old story…

  1. Is academic degree (or lack of it) the only measure of education?
    Whats the purpose of education?
When i look at the countries with higher social media penetration, makes me doubt if these tools alone by themselves, help bring the higher education on par with other countries.

US for example has crappy elemental / basic education, but good professional education. How do we explain that?

  2. Hi AMS

The challenge is that in the US the kids are encouraged to think and explore. Often the school system is a place to let the minds grow and choose the right professional set up.
India needs Social Media due to our sheer numbers and the lack of money to support education for all. The degree is a different ball game..

    HI sir,
I think the Indian educational system can grow beyond boundaries. But the only problem is the year old book system that is keeping it at stake. There is nothing beyond the books and the mind is restricted to the same.Social media penetration has only made the thinking more broader, something beyond the books and more interesting. As far as i know the only options in India as per the parents opinion are either being an Engineer or a Doctor.once this old school thought is broken then there is hope of growth.

  4. Hi Karthik

I agree and that mentality has to change. There is a constant fear in our minds that forces us to seek security in such pastures. I hope the mind set changes otherwise we will continue to play second fidle to others.
