Why you should be selective in deciding who to follow on Twitter

Following just about everybody on Twitter is a bad strategy, but unfortunately most of us do it anyways.

Why are we so compelled to let our relationships in life follow us into Twitter?

Following friends on Twitter who don't tweet is a bad strategy. click to tweet this

Especially if they tweet once in 6 months. You may have many followers that way as friends are sure to reciprocate, but the effectiveness of your network would be very low. Not sure how to check effectiveness. Well an easy way to do that is to go on Klout- www.klout.com, login with your twitter or Facebook id and check your score. In the detailed analysis of your score there are terms like true reach and amplification which will give you an idea on the extent of your effectiveness on social media.

so what I would advice is to selectively unfollow anyone who has not tweeted in a while, this gives to keep your Twitter list sane.

But how does one know who are active on their Twitter list?

The knowledge of knowing who is effective in spreading the message and who is just sitting there is  worth its weight in gold.

The most effective tool is a free tool call Social Bro. http://www.socialbro.com/. Using the basic version one can do analysis as to who are their most active members in the network. There is also analysis on aspects like best time to tweet and best day as well.

It is important to know your network as you build it. otherwise it is just like shooting in the dark an hoping to hit someone.

happy tweeting !

  1. Well twitter is "social" media right. :)

In biological societies (is there such a thing! :P ), the more things change the more they remain the same. Technology cannot solve problems originating from a human.
