German Cuisine

Being a vegetarian, it is always difficult to eat local food especially in Europe. It is with that constraint that I tried tasting one of the north German recipes. This is called wheat bran pancake with sauteed mushrooms.

The pancake is served on a pan, directly from the fire, something like a sizzler. It is meant to be eaten that way - directly from the pan. It is about 2mm thick and comes with a mild smearing of cheese on it. It is accompanied by mushrooms sauteed in oil, along with salt, pepper and vinegar.

The beauty of the dish is that it is very light and makes an excellent meal for dinner. It tastes more like a North Indian Chheela (made of Moong Dal) with a littleless of the Besan taste. The pancake is usually eaten with multigrain bread, though I was happy to eat it as is.

Indians trying this out in Germany should also ask for chilli flakes as the spice levels are not suifficient to stimulate the Indian palate. This dish should cost you 6 Euros at the Renaissance Hamburg, a business hotel. It should be much cheaper outside.
